Myths About Employment Lawyers
Don't let these excuses interfere with getting advice
"I don't want to sue.". "Lawyers are too expensive". Have you heard this? Have you said this? Let's talk about myths many people have about employment lawyers...
1. "Lawyers are for suing."
Too often people think they only need a lawyer if they want to sue their employer. Not true. The most important reason to contact a lawyer is to simply understand your legal rights.
This is especially important when you are getting terminated and they want you to sign paperwork. Don't sign anything! Employers want you to "release" any potential legal claims you may have against them. Doesn't this sound like a great reason to consult a lawyer to find out what they are so afraid of?
2. "Lawyers are too expensive."
Many are, but many are not. Lawyers charge in all sorts of different methods and rates. I pride myself on making my fees affordable to most. If you have a valid legal claim, many lawyers will take your case on "contingency", meaning you pay nothing up front, and the lawyer only gets paid if you do, and they take a percentage.
3. "I am scared getting a lawyer will make me look bad".
This one is for women especially: stop playing the good girl. You know who has a lawyer? Your employer! So why not even the playing just a bit?
4. "A lawyer cannot help, I just want this over with."
I understand you are exhausted, but you may regret later not getting legal advice. That's what we are for, to support you when you are tired!
